Detection of viral RNA in milk from Mother 2 coincided with mild COVID-19 symptoms and a SARS-CoV-2 positive diagnostic test of the newborn (Newborn 2). Mother 2 had been wearing a surgical mask since the onset of symptoms and followed safety precautions when handling or feeding the neonate (including proper hand and breast disinfection, strict washing, and sterilisation of milk pumps and tubes). However, whether Newborn 2 was infected by breastfeeding or other modes of transmission remains unclear. Further studies of milk samples from lactating women and possible virus transmission via breastfeeding are needed to develop recommendations on whether mothers with COVID-19 should breastfeed."

• Breastfeeding support counsellors from a Recognised Breastfeeding Support Counsellor Organisation must earn clinical practise hours in a delivery setting which meets the criteria outlined by IBLCE and may include telehealth or the use of other technologies as an option for providing services. Until January 1, 2022, the use of the flat rate of 250 hours per 12 months for providing mainly telephone and/or online services can be applied for these applicants.

HUMAN MILK SAMPLES NEEDED!
Researchers at the University of Idaho and University of Rochester are recruiting breastfeeding women with COVID-19 in order to study if the transmission of the virus can occur through breast milk and/or breastfeeding. The outcomes of this study will help address the important questions regarding the safety and benefits of breastfeeding in COVID-19 infected mothers and maternal immunity transfer through breast milk.
To participate, you must fit the following criteria
Be at least 18 years old and currently breastfeeding.
Have tested positive for COVID-19 in the last 48 hours or awaiting the results of being tested.
Participation would require at least one but ideally three milk samples and breast swabs in the week after you are diagnosed with COVID-19.
All materials needed to participate will be provided to you.
Interested in participating?
Email breastmilk@uidaho.edu or call 208-301-3740 for more information.
Funding for this research has been provided by a generous grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and an in-kind donation of breast milk pumps by Medela.

“Breastfed children of patients who are too unwell to breastfeed or who have died may require replacement feeding with a nutritionally adequate diet (e.g. with donor human milk, through wet nursing1 or with a breastmilk substitute (BMS)). Note that there is currently no specific recommendation on the safety of wet nursing in the context of novel coronavirus disease. The Operational Guidance on Infant and Young Child Feeding in Emergencies (IFE) section 6.2 instructs to “establish clear eligibility for BMS use in agreement with the IFE coordination authority. If criteria are already in place, review and revise as needed. Communicate these criteria to caregivers, communities and emergency responders.” (pg. 4)
